Job Description

Wasatch Forensic Services is offering an exciting and unique opportunity for an aspiring forensic scientist to gain invaluable hands-on observation and foundational experience within a professional crime laboratory environment. This internship is specifically designed for individuals with little to no prior professional experience in forensic science, focusing heavily on shadowing experienced scientists across various disciplines. Interns will observe laboratory procedures, evidence handling, analysis techniques, and report generation, providing a comprehensive overview of daily operations in a forensic setting. Full training and guidance will be provided, making this an ideal entry point for those passionate about a career in forensic science.

Key Responsibilities

  • Shadow forensic scientists during evidence intake and processing.
  • Observe various analytical techniques in toxicology, trace evidence, and biology sections.
  • Assist with basic laboratory maintenance and organization under direct supervision.
  • Familiarize self with laboratory quality assurance protocols and safety guidelines.
  • Participate in team meetings and case discussions to understand workflow.
  • Review redacted case reports and documentation to understand reporting standards.
  • Learn about expert witness testimony preparation and court procedures through observation.
  • Maintain a detailed log of observations and learning experiences.

Required Skills

  • Strong academic interest in forensic science, chemistry, biology, or a related field.
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
  • High ethical standards and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
