Job Description
We are seeking a diligent and organised Public Sector Fleet Dispatcher to join our Transport Department. In this vital on-site role, you will be responsible for the efficient scheduling, routing, and monitoring of our diverse fleet of vehicles and drivers. Your primary goal will be to ensure timely and effective deployment of resources to meet operational demands across Leicester City Council’s services. This position requires excellent communication skills, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. You will be a key player in ensuring our public services run smoothly and effectively for the community, directly contributing to the well-being of Leicester’s residents.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and dispatch vehicles and drivers for daily operations, optimising routes and schedules to maximise efficiency.
- Monitor real-time fleet movements using tracking systems and communicate updates to relevant departments and drivers.
- Respond promptly to operational changes, emergencies, and breakdowns, re-allocating resources as necessary.
- Maintain accurate records of vehicle assignments, driver logs, and operational data.
- Liaise effectively with drivers, council departments, and external partners to ensure smooth coordination.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant transport regulations, safety standards, and council policies.
- Assist in the coordination of vehicle maintenance schedules to minimise disruption to services.
- Prepare daily reports on fleet performance and operational issues to management.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in a dispatch, logistics, or transport coordination role (minimum 1 year).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, for effective internal and external liaison.
- Strong organisational skills, meticulous attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Proficiency in using dispatch software and GPS tracking systems for fleet management.
- Ability to make quick, informed decisions under pressure and adapt to rapidly changing situations.
- Sound geographical knowledge of Leicester and surrounding areas to optimise routing.
- Competency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) for record-keeping and communication.
Preferred Qualifications
- NVQ Level 3 in Logistics, Transport, or a related field, or equivalent professional qualification.
- Experience working within a public sector or local government environment, understanding public service demands.
- Familiarity with specific fleet management software used in public transport or local authority operations.
- Full UK driving licence (Category B) for potential site visits or emergency support.
