Job Description
NORC is seeking a dedicated and passionate Oceanographer / Marine Biologist to join our dynamic research team in Corner Brook, Newfoundland. This full-time, on-site position is an exciting opportunity for an early to mid-career professional to contribute to vital marine science initiatives in the Atlantic region. The successful candidate will play a key role in designing, executing, and analyzing marine research projects, focusing on oceanographic processes, marine biodiversity, and the impacts of environmental change. This role involves both field-based data collection, often in challenging marine environments, and laboratory/office-based analysis and report writing. Key Responsibilities
- Design and conduct marine research projects, including experimental design, sampling protocols, and data collection methodologies.
- Perform extensive field work, which may include vessel-based expeditions, remote sensing, and in-situ sampling of marine environments (e.g., water quality, plankton, benthic communities).
- Analyze complex oceanographic, biological, and ecological datasets using statistical software and geospatial tools.
- Prepare high-quality scientific reports, peer-reviewed publications, and presentations for diverse audiences.
- Collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, including other scientists, technicians, and external partners.
- Operate and maintain specialized oceanographic and marine biological equipment.
- Contribute to grant proposals and funding applications.
- Mentor junior staff and participate in outreach activities as required.
Required Skills
- PhD or Master's degree in Oceanography, Marine Biology, Marine Ecology, or a closely related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant post-graduate research experience (academic or professional).
- Proven proficiency in statistical analysis and data visualization using software such as R, Python, or MATLAB.
- Demonstrated experience with various marine sampling techniques and equipment (e.g., CTDs, plankton nets, ROVs, sediment corers).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with a strong ability to convey complex scientific information.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Physical fitness and willingness to conduct extensive field work, often in adverse weather conditions and remote locations.
- Valid Class 5 driver's license (or equivalent) for Canada.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) for mapping and spatial analysis.
- Scientific diving certification (e.g., PADI Advanced Open Water, AAUS or CSA scientific diver).
- Experience working in Arctic or North Atlantic marine environments.
- Track record of peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
- Familiarity with Canadian marine conservation policies and regulations.
