Job Description

Are you passionate about mechanics and eager to launch a rewarding career? The City of Peoria’s Public Works Department is offering an exciting Trainee Fleet Mechanic Apprenticeship. This is a unique opportunity for individuals with little to no prior experience to gain hands-on training and become skilled professionals in maintaining our vital fleet of government vehicles. You’ll learn from experienced mentors, work on a variety of vehicle types, and contribute directly to the smooth operation of essential city services. Full training will be provided, leading to a recognized qualification.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist certified mechanics with routine maintenance and repairs on a variety of government vehicles and equipment.
  • Learn to diagnose mechanical and electrical issues under direct supervision.
  • Perform oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, and fluid checks.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, adhering to all safety protocols.
  • Participate in structured training programs and complete required coursework.
  • Document work performed and parts used accurately.
  • Shadow experienced mechanics to observe advanced repair techniques and diagnostic procedures.

Required Skills

  • Willingness to learn and a strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team.
  • Possession of a valid Illinois Class D Driver's License or ability to obtain one within a specified timeframe.
  • Basic understanding of tools and safety practices.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of high school automotive shop classes or vocational training.
  • Basic knowledge of vehicle systems (engine, transmission, brakes).
  • Familiarity with heavy equipment or diesel engines.
