Job Description
We are seeking dedicated and experienced Specialized Heavy Haul Escort Drivers (Pilot Car Operators) to join our dynamic team. This critical role involves safely escorting oversized and overweight loads across various routes, ensuring compliance with all state and federal regulations. The position requires extensive travel and a strong commitment to safety and professionalism. You will be responsible for operating a pilot vehicle, providing real-time communication, and maintaining constant vigilance to facilitate the safe movement of specialized freight. Key Responsibilities
- Operate pilot/escort vehicle safely and in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations.
- Maintain constant communication with heavy haul drivers, other escort vehicles, and relevant authorities.
- Lead or follow oversized loads, providing warnings of potential hazards and assisting with route navigation.
- Monitor traffic conditions and road obstacles, ensuring clear passage for the escorted load.
- Assist in pre-trip and post-trip inspections of escort vehicles and communicate any maintenance needs.
- Complete all necessary paperwork, including logs, permits, and incident reports accurately and promptly.
- Adhere to company safety policies and procedures at all times.
- Represent XPO Logistics professionally to clients, law enforcement, and the public.
- Adapt to changing schedules, routes, and weather conditions as required by project demands.
Required Skills
- Valid Class C (or higher) Driver's License with an impeccable driving record.
- Minimum of 2 years of professional driving experience, preferably in commercial or logistics roles.
- Ability to travel extensively for extended periods.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to react quickly to dynamic situations.
- Knowledge of federal and state regulations pertaining to oversized load escorting.
- Ability to read maps, GPS, and understand routing instructions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a heavy haul escort driver or pilot car operator.
- Certifications in specific state-required pilot car training programs.
- Basic mechanical aptitude for minor vehicle checks and troubleshooting.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
