Job Description
Are you looking for a new career with comprehensive training and excellent benefits? The City of Farmington Transit Department is seeking motivated individuals to join our team as Transit Operators / Bus Drivers in Training. No prior experience operating a bus or a CDL is required; we provide fully paid, top-tier training to help you obtain your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and become a skilled professional bus operator. This entry-level position is perfect for those who enjoy working with people, have a strong commitment to safety, and are looking for a stable and rewarding career serving their community.
Key Responsibilities
- Successfully complete all phases of the paid CDL training program
- Learn and adhere to all federal, state, and local traffic laws and regulations
- Master safe and efficient operation of transit buses on designated routes
- Provide friendly, helpful, and professional customer service to all passengers
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, reporting any defects
- Assist passengers with disabilities, including operating wheelchair lifts and securing mobility devices
- Maintain accurate passenger counts and fare collection (once trained)
- Communicate effectively with dispatch and supervisors regarding route status and any issues
- Maintain a clean and orderly bus interior
Required Skills
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Possess a valid New Mexico Driver's License with a clean driving record
- Ability to pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background check
- Strong commitment to safety protocols and procedures
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Ability to learn and follow complex instructions and schedules
- Reliable attendance and punctuality
- Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement upon completion of paid training
Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Previous experience in a customer-facing role
- Basic mechanical aptitude
