Job Description

The City of Summerside is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Housing & Community Development Intern to join our Planning and Development team. This entry-level internship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in municipal planning, with a focus on zoning bylaws, housing initiatives, and community development projects. The intern will work closely with experienced planners and staff, contributing to projects that directly impact the liveability and growth of our city. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates eager to apply academic knowledge in a real-world municipal setting and develop a foundational understanding of urban planning and local governance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in reviewing and interpreting zoning bylaws and land use plans.
  • Conduct research on best practices in housing affordability and community development.
  • Support the preparation of reports, presentations, and public notices related to planning applications and projects.
  • Help organize and prepare materials for public meetings and consultations.
  • Contribute to data collection and analysis for various planning studies and initiatives.
  • Shadow planning staff during site visits and public engagement activities.
  • Perform administrative tasks as required by the Planning and Development Department.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of an urban planning, geography, public administration, environmental studies, or related program.
  • Strong interest in municipal planning, housing, and community development.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct research and synthesize information effectively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Eagerness to learn and contribute to a team environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).
  • Understanding of Prince Edward Island's Municipal Government Act or similar provincial legislation.
  • Previous volunteer or project experience related to urban planning or community work.
  • Valid PEI Class 5 driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle.
