Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Fine Art Conservator / Restorer to join our expert team in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. This is an exceptional opportunity for a talented professional to contribute to the preservation of valuable artistic heritage. The role involves the examination, documentation, and conservation treatment of a wide range of fine art objects, primarily paintings and sometimes sculptures. We are committed to supporting international talent, and a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) is available for eligible candidates who require visa sponsorship to work in the UK.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough condition assessments and technical examinations of artworks.
- Develop and implement appropriate conservation and restoration treatment proposals.
- Execute delicate conservation treatments, including cleaning, consolidation, structural repairs, and inpainting.
- Document all stages of conservation treatment with written reports and photographic records.
- Advise clients on preventative conservation measures and environmental controls.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and research relevant to conservation practices.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment within the studio.
- Collaborate effectively with colleagues, clients, and other stakeholders.
Required Skills
- Formal qualification in Fine Art Conservation or a related discipline (e.g., Master's degree).
- Proven practical experience in the conservation and restoration of fine art objects, particularly paintings.
- Proficiency in various conservation techniques and materials.
- Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving abilities.
- Meticulous attention to detail and exceptional manual dexterity.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for documentation and client interaction.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Understanding of conservation ethics and best practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Accreditation by a recognized professional conservation body (e.g., ICON).
- Experience with a broader range of materials beyond paintings (e.g., gilded objects, frames).
- Familiarity with scientific analysis techniques used in conservation.
- Proficiency in additional languages.
