Job Description

Are you fascinated by the cosmos, eager to inspire future scientists, and looking for a hands-on learning experience? The Queensland Museum is offering an exciting internship opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to join our Planetarium & Science Center team. This entry-level position is designed for individuals with a passion for science communication and an interest in astronomy and physics, regardless of prior professional experience. You will receive comprehensive training in all aspects of planetarium operations, exhibit interpretation, and educational program delivery. This internship is a fantastic stepping stone for a career in science education, museum studies, or public outreach, providing invaluable practical experience in a vibrant and supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the daily operation and presentation of planetarium shows.
  • Support educational programs and workshops for diverse age groups, from school children to adults.
  • Engage with visitors, answering questions and providing information about exhibits and astronomical phenomena.
  • Aid in the development and preparation of new educational materials and presentations.
  • Contribute to the upkeep and maintenance of planetarium equipment and science center exhibits under supervision.
  • Participate in training sessions to enhance knowledge of astronomy, physics, and science communication techniques.
  • Collaborate with museum staff to ensure a positive and enriching visitor experience.

Required Skills

  • Strong passion for science, particularly astronomy and space exploration.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Eagerness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced educational environment.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Reliable, punctual, and responsible with a positive attitude.
  • Basic computer literacy (e.g., Microsoft Office suite).
  • No prior professional experience required; full training will be provided.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Science, Education, Museum Studies, Communications, or a related field (e.g., Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics).
  • Demonstrated interest in public speaking or presentation.
  • Experience volunteering in an educational or public outreach setting.
  • Familiarity with digital projection systems or audiovisual equipment (training will be provided).
