Job Description

Fairfield City Council is seeking a dedicated and community-focused Local Laws Officer to join our dynamic team. This role will primarily focus on animal management and parking enforcement, ensuring compliance with local government acts and regulations, and contributing to the safety and amenity of our community. You will be responsible for investigating complaints, educating the public, and taking appropriate enforcement action where necessary, all while promoting positive community relations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Patrol assigned areas to identify and address breaches of local laws, with a primary focus on animal control and parking regulations.
  • Investigate complaints regarding wandering animals, barking dogs, dangerous dogs, and unregistered animals, taking appropriate action as per legislation.
  • Respond to incidents involving stray, injured, or deceased animals, ensuring humane handling and appropriate disposal or return.
  • Enforce parking restrictions, including issuing infringement notices for illegal parking, clearway violations, and other related offences.
  • Provide clear and concise advice to the public regarding local laws, regulations, and responsible pet ownership.
  • Prepare detailed reports, statements, and documentation for investigations and legal proceedings.
  • Represent Council in court or at tribunals as required.
  • Maintain accurate records of all activities, investigations, and enforcement actions using Council's systems.
  • Collaborate with other Council departments and external agencies as needed.
  • Educate the community on local laws and promote compliance through engagement and proactive initiatives.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated understanding of relevant local government legislation, particularly relating to companion animals and parking enforcement.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse community members, often in challenging situations.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in an outdoor, all-weather environment.
  • Proficiency in using computer systems for record-keeping and reporting.
  • Current NSW Class C Driver's Licence.
  • Ability to handle and manage animals safely and humanely.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate IV in Local Government (Regulatory Services) or similar qualification.
  • Previous experience in a local government regulatory, enforcement, or ranger role.
  • Knowledge of the Fairfield Local Government Area.
  • First Aid Certificate.
