Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and culturally sensitive Aboriginal Health Liaison to join our team in Port Macquarie. This pivotal role involves improving health outcomes for Aboriginal people by facilitating access to and engagement with health services, providing culturally appropriate support, and advocating on behalf of patients and their families. The Aboriginal Health Liaison acts as a crucial link between Aboriginal communities, individuals, and health service providers, ensuring that healthcare is delivered in a respectful, equitable, and effective manner.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide culturally appropriate support, advocacy, and navigation for Aboriginal patients and their families within health services.
- Facilitate communication and understanding between Aboriginal patients/communities and healthcare staff.
- Assist Aboriginal patients in understanding their health conditions, treatment options, and navigating the healthcare system.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals to ensure the delivery of culturally sensitive and responsive health care.
- Participate in community engagement activities to promote health literacy and address health disparities.
- Identify and address barriers to accessing health services for Aboriginal people.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of Aboriginal health initiatives and policies.
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to reporting on patient interactions and outcomes.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated understanding and commitment to Aboriginal culture, history, and current issues affecting Aboriginal people.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Proven advocacy skills with a patient-centred approach.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion.
- Cultural competency and sensitivity in all interactions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certificate III or IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, or a related field.
- Previous experience working in a health or community service setting, particularly with Aboriginal communities.
- Knowledge of local Aboriginal communities and networks in the Port Macquarie-Hastings region.
- Current NSW Driver's License.
