Job Description
The National Library of Australia is seeking a dedicated and meticulous Archive Assistant to join our team in Port Macquarie. This federal role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the preservation of Australia’s documentary heritage. The successful candidate will assist with the day-to-day operations of our archival collections, ensuring their proper cataloguing, handling, and storage. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals passionate about history and cultural preservation, providing comprehensive training in archival practices. You will play a crucial part in making our national treasures accessible for future generations.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the processing, arrangement, and description of archival collections.
- Conduct basic preservation activities, including rehousing and re-foldering of materials.
- Maintain accurate records and update database entries for new and existing collections.
- Support researchers and public access by retrieving and reshelving archival items.
- Monitor environmental conditions in storage areas and report any issues.
- Participate in stocktakes and inventory verification processes.
- Adhere to national archival standards and safety protocols.
Required Skills
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
- Basic computer proficiency, including data entry.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Physical ability to lift and move archival boxes (up to 15kg).
