Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Art Conservator (Assistant) to join our esteemed Fine Arts conservation team. This entry-level position is ideal for an individual passionate about the preservation of cultural heritage, offering an unparalleled opportunity to develop practical skills under the guidance of experienced professionals. The successful candidate will assist in the examination, documentation, and treatment of artworks within our extensive collection, focusing on paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. Full training will be provided to ensure the highest standards of conservation practice are upheld.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior conservators with the examination and condition reporting of artworks.
  • Perform basic cleaning, stabilization, and minor repair treatments on various art mediums under direct supervision.
  • Document conservation treatments, including photographic records and written reports.
  • Prepare artworks for exhibition, loan, and storage.
  • Conduct research related to conservation materials and techniques.
  • Maintain a clean and organized studio environment.
  • Adhere to best practices in conservation ethics and health and safety regulations.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to ongoing projects.

Required Skills

  • Basic knowledge of art history and artistic techniques.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and manual dexterity.
  • Strong observational and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to work meticulously and patiently.
  • Enthusiasm for learning and developing new skills in art conservation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A degree in Fine Art Conservation, Art History, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Previous experience (paid or volunteer) in an art gallery, museum, or conservation studio.
  • Familiarity with conservation software or databases.
  • Knowledge of various artistic materials and their degradation processes.
