Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated individual to join our team as an Artisan Cheesemonger Trainee in our Caernarfon store. This is a fantastic entry-level opportunity to embark on a rewarding career in fine food retail, with a particular focus on the fascinating world of cheese affinage and customer service. No prior experience is required as comprehensive, hands-on training will be provided. You will learn the art of selecting, storing, cutting, and presenting a wide variety of cheeses, as well as providing expert recommendations to our discerning customers. This is an on-site role where you will be an integral part of our dynamic food hall team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake comprehensive training in cheese varieties, origins, flavour profiles, and proper handling techniques.
  • Learn about cheese affinage, including maturation, care, and quality control processes.
  • Assist with the preparation, cutting, and packaging of cheeses according to Waitrose & Partners' stringent standards.
  • Maintain immaculate counter displays, ensuring cheeses are presented attractively and hygienically.
  • Engage actively with customers, offering knowledgeable advice, samples, and helping them discover new and favourite cheeses.
  • Manage stock rotation, inventory, and ensure product freshness and minimise waste.
  • Adhere strictly to all food safety and hygiene regulations and company policies.
  • Support the wider deli team as needed, contributing to a positive and efficient shopping experience for all customers.

Required Skills

  • A genuine passion for food and a keen interest in learning about artisan cheeses.
  • Exceptional customer service skills and a friendly, approachable demeanour.
  • Strong communication skills, able to engage effectively with both customers and colleagues.
  • A willingness to learn and apply new knowledge and techniques quickly.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of quality and hygiene.
  • Basic numeracy skills for tasks such as weighing, pricing, and stock management.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • No prior experience is necessary; we provide all the training required for your success.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An enthusiastic and curious approach to culinary arts or food science.
  • Previous experience in a customer-facing role, although not essential, would be beneficial.
  • An eagerness to develop specialist knowledge in a niche food area and become an expert.
