Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Boat Builder (Mate) to join our skilled team in Leith. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with foundational marine experience or a strong aptitude for hands-on work in a boatyard environment. As a Boat Builder Mate, you will work closely with experienced boat builders, assisting in all phases of boat construction, maintenance, and repair. This role involves learning traditional and modern boat building techniques, working with various materials, and contributing to the creation of high-quality marine vessels. Full training and mentorship will be provided to help you develop into a skilled craftsman.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior boat builders with all aspects of boat construction, repair, and finishing.
  • Prepare materials, tools, and equipment for various tasks, ensuring a safe and organized workspace.
  • Perform general shop duties, including cleaning, organizing, and maintaining tools and machinery.
  • Learn and apply techniques for working with wood, fiberglass, composites, and other marine materials.
  • Support fitting out processes, including installation of internal components, deck hardware, and systems.
  • Assist with sanding, fairing, painting, and varnishing to achieve high-quality finishes.
  • Follow safety protocols and company guidelines at all times.
  • Contribute positively to a collaborative team environment and be eager to learn new skills.

  • Basic understanding of hand and power tools.
  • Strong manual dexterity and attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Eagerness to learn and develop boat building skills.
  • Physical fitness and ability to lift heavy objects and work in various postures.
  • Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
  • Basic understanding of workplace safety practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a marine, construction, or woodworking environment (including hobbies or personal projects).
  • Formal qualification or apprenticeship in boat building, carpentry, or a related trade.
  • Knowledge of different boat types and construction methods.
  • Experience with fiberglass repair or lamination.
  • First Aid certification.
