Job Description

The Bairnsdale Botanic Gardens Trust is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Botanic Gardens Labourer with a strong focus on horticulture to join our maintenance team. This full-time, on-site role involves performing a variety of tasks essential for the upkeep and development of our beautiful gardens. You will contribute to the aesthetic appeal and botanical integrity of the gardens, working under the guidance of our Head Horticulturist. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general garden maintenance tasks including planting, watering, weeding, mulching, pruning, and raking.
  • Operate and maintain a range of garden machinery and hand tools safely and efficiently (e.g., mowers, trimmers, blowers).
  • Assist with the preparation and improvement of garden beds, soil conditioning, and pest/disease management.
  • Contribute to the implementation of planting schemes and landscape projects.
  • Ensure cleanliness and tidiness of garden areas, pathways, and public facilities.
  • Adhere to all safety procedures and guidelines for staff and visitors.
  • Report any issues with plant health, equipment, or safety concerns to the supervisor.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in general garden maintenance or labouring roles (minimum 12 months preferred).
  • Basic knowledge of horticultural practices and plant identification.
  • Ability to operate standard garden machinery safely.
  • Strong physical fitness and ability to perform manual labour in various weather conditions.
  • A proactive attitude and ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid Australian Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate II or III in Horticulture or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience working in a public garden or park environment.
  • First Aid Certificate.
  • Knowledge of native Australian flora.
