Job Description
The Townsville City Council is seeking a compassionate and diligent Cemetery Grounds Assistant to join our dedicated team. This entry-level role is ideal for individuals who are physically capable, possess a strong work ethic, and are committed to maintaining the respectful environment of our cemeteries. You will play a crucial role in ensuring the grounds are kept to the highest standards of cleanliness, presentation, and safety. Full training will be provided to the successful candidate, focusing on all aspects of cemetery maintenance and respectful interaction with visitors.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general grounds maintenance including mowing, weeding, pruning, and watering.
- Maintain memorials, headstones, and other cemetery structures with care and respect.
- Assist with the preparation of burial sites, including digging and backfilling as required.
- Operate and maintain various groundskeeping equipment such as mowers, trimmers, and blowers.
- Ensure pathways, roads, and communal areas are clean, safe, and free from debris.
- Provide compassionate and respectful assistance to visitors and bereaved families as needed.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and environmental guidelines.
- Report any maintenance issues, hazards, or concerns promptly to the supervisor.
Required Skills
- Physical fitness and ability to perform manual labour in various weather conditions.
- Strong work ethic and a commitment to maintaining high standards.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Respectful and empathetic demeanour when interacting with the public.
- A valid Australian driver's license (manual preferred).
- Commitment to continuous learning and adherence to safety procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in grounds maintenance or a similar manual role is advantageous but not essential.
- Basic understanding of horticulture or landscape maintenance.
- First Aid certification.
- White Card (General Construction Induction Card).
