Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Child Protection Social Worker to join our dynamic Children’s Services team based in Worthing. This is a critical role focused on safeguarding children and young people from harm, promoting their welfare, and ensuring they live in safe and nurturing environments. You will manage a complex and varied caseload, undertake comprehensive assessments, develop and implement robust care plans, and work collaboratively with families, other professionals, and agencies to achieve positive and lasting outcomes for children.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a caseload of children and families requiring child protection intervention, including undertaking Section 47 enquiries.
- Conduct comprehensive, evidence-based assessments of risk and need for children and young people, identifying appropriate interventions.
- Develop, implement, and regularly review Child Protection Plans in collaboration with children, families, and multi-agency partners.
- Undertake direct work with children and families to support positive change and enhance their safety and well-being.
- Prepare high-quality, analytical reports for Child Protection Conferences, Public Law Outline (PLO) meetings, and court proceedings.
- Represent the Local Authority in court when necessary, providing professional evidence and recommendations.
- Participate in duty rotas, responding promptly and effectively to urgent safeguarding concerns.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date, and concise records in accordance with statutory requirements and local policies.
- Work collaboratively with police, health, education, and other agencies to ensure integrated service delivery and shared responsibility for child protection.
Required Skills
- Qualified Social Worker (DipSW, CQSW, BA Hons Social Work, MA Social Work or equivalent).
- Current registration with Social Work England (or eligible for immediate registration).
- Demonstrable experience in child protection social work within a statutory setting (minimum of 2 years post-qualifying experience).
- Thorough understanding of relevant child care legislation, statutory guidance, policies, and procedures (e.g., Children Act 1989/2004, Working Together to Safeguard Children).
- Excellent assessment, analytical, and report writing skills, with the ability to articulate complex information clearly.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging effectively and empathetically with children, families, and professionals from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to manage a demanding and complex caseload, prioritize effectively, and work autonomously under pressure.
- A commitment to continuous professional development, reflective practice, and adherence to ethical social work principles.
- Full UK driving license and access to a car for business use.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience of court work, including preparing detailed legal reports and giving evidence in family proceedings.
- Post-graduate qualification in a relevant social work specialism or related field.
- Specific training or experience in therapeutic interventions, attachment theory, or trauma-informed practice.
- Experience mentoring or supervising less experienced social workers.
