Job Description

Are you ready to embark on a stable and rewarding career that makes a real impact in your community? AC Transit is seeking highly motivated individuals to join our team as City Bus Driver Trainees. No prior bus driving experience is required! We offer comprehensive, paid training to help you obtain your Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger Endorsement. Key Responsibilities

• Successfully complete AC Transit's paid CDL training program.
• Safely operate a transit bus on assigned routes and schedules, adhering to all traffic laws and regulations.
• Provide excellent customer service to all passengers, including assisting with boarding and alighting as needed.
• Collect fares, issue transfers, and ensure proper passenger accountability.
• Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the bus, reporting any defects or mechanical issues.
• Communicate effectively with dispatch, supervisors, and the public using a two-way radio and other communication systems.
• Handle unexpected situations, such as mechanical breakdowns or passenger incidents, calmly and professionally.
• Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
• Maintain accurate records, including trip sheets and incident reports.
• Maintain a clean and orderly bus interior.

Required Skills

• Valid California Class C Driver's License (or equivalent) for at least 3 years with a good driving record.
• Ability to obtain a California Class B Commercial Driver's Permit (CDL Permit) before training commences.
• Willingness and ability to successfully complete AC Transit's intensive, paid CDL training program.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a strong customer service orientation.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Ability to pass a comprehensive background check, drug screen, and Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination.
• A strong commitment to safety, reliability, and punctuality.
• Physical ability to sit for extended periods, operate foot and hand controls, and navigate bus ramps/lifts.
• No prior bus driving experience required; full training will be provided.

Preferred Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Previous experience in a customer-facing role or service industry.
• Familiarity with the geography and road network of Oakland and the surrounding Bay Area.
