Job Description

Join the dedicated team at the Cape Breton Regional Municipality as a City Street Sweeper Operator. This full-time position offers the opportunity to contribute directly to the cleanliness and safety of our community’s streets. You will be responsible for operating specialized street sweeping equipment, primarily during early morning shifts, to remove debris, litter, and other materials from municipal roads and public areas. We are seeking reliable individuals who are committed to public service and can operate heavy machinery efficiently and safely. Key Responsibilities

  • Operate street sweeping equipment safely and efficiently on designated routes.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment, reporting any mechanical issues.
  • Ensure thorough cleaning of streets, curbs, gutters, and public areas.
  • Adhere to all traffic laws, safety regulations, and municipal policies.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, including routes covered and materials collected.
  • Report any observed hazards or infrastructure damage to supervisors.
  • Perform minor maintenance and cleaning of the street sweeper as required.
  • Work cooperatively with other Public Works staff and departments.

Required Skills

  • Valid Class 3 (or D) driver's license with air brake endorsement (or willingness to obtain within probationary period).
  • Clean driving record.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment safely and effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
  • Ability to work early morning shifts, including weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Physical ability to perform manual tasks associated with the role, including climbing, lifting, and prolonged sitting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience operating street sweeping equipment or similar heavy machinery.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and minor repairs.
  • Knowledge of local traffic laws and geographical layout of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.
