Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Fine Art Conservator / Restorer to join our expert team in Wrexham. This pivotal role involves the examination, documentation, treatment, and preventative conservation of a wide range of artworks, including paintings, sculptures, and historical objects. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of art history, material science, and conservation ethics, coupled with practical skills in various restoration techniques. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough condition assessments and technical examinations of artworks using appropriate analytical methods.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive conservation and restoration treatment plans, adhering to ethical guidelines and best practices.
  • Perform skilled practical treatments including cleaning, consolidation, structural repair, infilling, and inpainting.
  • Maintain meticulous documentation of all procedures, materials used, and artwork condition through written reports and photographic records.
  • Advise clients on preventative conservation measures, environmental controls, and safe handling practices.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and external specialists on complex projects.
  • Stay abreast of advancements in conservation science, materials, and techniques.
  • Contribute to the studio's reputation for excellence and ethical practice.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Fine Art Conservation, Restoration, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of demonstrable experience in a professional fine art conservation setting.
  • Proficiency in the conservation and restoration of a specific art medium (e.g., oil paintings, sculpture, paper).
  • Strong knowledge of art history, materials, and manufacturing techniques across various periods.
  • Excellent manual dexterity, precision, and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for documentation and client interaction.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Specialisation in multiple art media.
  • Experience with scientific analysis techniques (e.g., IR, UV, X-ray).
  • Portfolio demonstrating a range of completed conservation projects.
  • Membership in a professional conservation body (e.g., ICON).
  • Familiarity with digital documentation software.
