Job Description
Are you passionate about community safety and public health, but lack the direct experience? We are excited to offer an entry-level Trainee Environmental Health Inspector position within our Local Authority. No prior experience is required, as comprehensive training will be provided to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in this vital role. You will learn to conduct inspections, investigate public health concerns, and enforce environmental health regulations to protect our community.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in a structured training program to learn environmental health laws, regulations, and inspection protocols.
- Shadow experienced Environmental Health Inspectors on site visits and investigations.
- Assist with routine inspections of food establishments, public pools, septic systems, and other regulated facilities under supervision.
- Learn to identify potential public health hazards and communicate findings effectively.
- Assist in the collection of samples and data for laboratory analysis.
- Maintain accurate records and prepare reports related to inspections and investigations.
- Respond to citizen inquiries and complaints regarding environmental health issues.
- Collaborate with other department staff and external agencies on public health initiatives.
- Complete all required certifications and training modules within specified timeframes.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid North Carolina Driver's License or ability to obtain one.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse populations.
- Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to learn and apply complex regulations and procedures.
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
- Demonstrated commitment to public service and community well-being.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, Biology, Chemistry, or a related science field.
- Some experience in customer service or a public-facing role.
- Familiarity with local government operations or public health principles.
