Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Forensic Scientist/Toxicologist to join our dynamic team in Virginia Beach, VA. This position offers an exciting opportunity to apply your expertise in a critical laboratory setting, conducting complex analyses of biological samples for the presence of drugs, poisons, and other toxic substances. The successful candidate will be responsible for a range of duties from sample preparation and instrumental analysis to data interpretation and report generation. This role requires meticulous attention to detail, adherence to strict quality control protocols, and the ability to articulate scientific findings clearly and concisely, including expert witness testimony in court. Key Responsibilities
- Perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of biological samples (e.g., blood, urine, tissue) for drugs, alcohol, and other controlled substances using various analytical techniques.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot advanced instrumentation including GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, and immunoassay platforms.
- Develop and validate new analytical methods and procedures in accordance with accreditation standards.
- Interpret analytical data, evaluate results, and prepare comprehensive forensic reports for submission to clients and courts.
- Maintain meticulous chain-of-custody documentation and laboratory records.
- Adhere strictly to quality assurance and quality control protocols, including proficiency testing.
- Provide expert witness testimony in judicial proceedings regarding laboratory findings and methodologies.
- Participate in laboratory accreditation activities and internal/external audits.
- Stay current with scientific advancements, emerging drugs, and best practices in forensic toxicology.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Forensic Science, Chemistry, Toxicology, or a closely related natural science.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a forensic toxicology laboratory setting.
- Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting analytical instrumentation (GC-MS, LC-MS/MS).
- Strong understanding of forensic toxicology principles, analytical chemistry, and pharmacokinetics.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex scientific information clearly.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Ability to pass a comprehensive background check and drug screening.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or Ph.D. in Forensic Science, Toxicology, or Analytical Chemistry.
- Certification by the American Board of Forensic Toxicology (ABFT) or American Board of Criminalistics (ABC).
- Experience with LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) software.
- Prior experience providing expert witness testimony in court.
