Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Highway Maintenance Operative to join our dedicated team within Dundee City Council. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual committed to public service and maintaining the safety and efficiency of our city’s road network. As a Highway Maintenance Operative, you will play a crucial role in ensuring our roads, pathways, and public spaces are safe, accessible, and well-maintained for all users. This position offers premium pay in recognition of the critical nature of the work and the skills required.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine inspection, maintenance, and repair of roads, footpaths, verges, and other highway assets.
- Carry out pothole repairs, resurfacing, patching, and minor civil engineering works.
- Operate a range of plant, machinery, and power tools safely and efficiently, including excavators, rollers, and specialist road working equipment.
- Undertake winter maintenance duties, including gritting and snow clearing, on a rotational basis.
- Maintain drainage systems, gully emptying, and clearing blockages.
- Install, repair, and maintain street furniture, road signs, and road markings.
- Respond to emergency call-outs for highway defects or incidents.
- Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations and Council policies.
- Complete accurate daily work records and reports.
Required Skills
- Valid UK Driving Licence (HGV Class 2 preferred or willingness to obtain)
- Demonstrable experience in highway maintenance, civil engineering, or a related manual trade.
- Ability to operate a variety of plant and equipment safely.
- Strong understanding of health and safety procedures in a highways environment.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
- Physical fitness to undertake demanding manual labour in all weather conditions.
- Excellent communication skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Preferred Qualifications
- NVQ Level 2 in Highway Maintenance or equivalent qualification.
- Relevant Streetworks (NRSWA) Operative qualifications.
- Experience with winter maintenance operations.
- First Aid at Work certification.
- Experience operating specialist road construction machinery.
