Job Description

We are seeking dedicated and skilled Highway Maintenance Operatives to join our vital team in Lisburn. This is a crucial role within the Department for Infrastructure, offering premium pay for those committed to maintaining the safety and integrity of Northern Ireland’s road network. As a Highway Maintenance Operative, you will be responsible for undertaking a variety of tasks essential for the upkeep and repair of highways, ensuring they remain safe and accessible for all users. Your work will directly impact the daily lives of residents and play a key part in public safety. Full training on specific procedures and equipment will be provided to ensure you meet our high standards of operational excellence and safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carrying out routine highway maintenance, including pothole repairs, drainage clearance, and verge cutting.
  • Assisting with emergency response to road incidents, such as spills, accidents, and adverse weather conditions.
  • Operating a range of plant and equipment safely and efficiently, including power tools, small plant, and potentially larger vehicles (dependent on licenses).
  • Implementing traffic management measures and ensuring site safety for the public and colleagues.
  • Undertaking minor civils works, including paving, kerbing, and path repairs.
  • Conducting routine inspections and reporting defects or hazards on the highway network.
  • Adhering strictly to health and safety regulations and environmental policies.
  • Completing necessary paperwork and records accurately.

Required Skills

  • Valid UK Driving Licence (Category B minimum).
  • Proven ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Basic understanding of health and safety principles in a construction or outdoor work environment.
  • Physical fitness suitable for manual labour and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work autonomously when required.
  • Commitment to high standards of workmanship and safety.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in highway maintenance, civil engineering, or a related outdoor manual role.
  • NVQ Level 2 in Highway Maintenance or a relevant qualification.
  • HGV (Category C1 or C) or other plant operation licenses (e.g., for excavators, rollers, gritters).
  • Knowledge of traffic management procedures (NRSWA Operative accreditation).
  • First Aid at Work certification.
