Job Description
Are you a passionate and aspiring journalist eager to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic digital newsroom? ABC Tropical North is offering an exciting student placement opportunity for individuals currently enrolled in a journalism or media-related degree. This placement provides invaluable exposure to the daily operations of a regional media outlet, focusing on digital content creation, news gathering, and multi-platform storytelling. Work alongside experienced journalists and contribute to real news outcomes for our local community.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist journalists with research, fact-checking, and interviewing for news stories.
- Contribute to the creation of digital content, including writing articles, shooting photos, and gathering audio/video clips.
- Learn and apply basic journalistic ethics, media law, and editorial guidelines.
- Support the news team in daily content production for web and social media platforms.
- Participate in editorial meetings and pitch story ideas relevant to the local community.
- Help manage social media channels and engage with our online audience.
- Undertake general administrative tasks as required by the newsroom.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree or higher in Journalism, Communications, Media, or a related field.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated interest in current affairs and local community issues.
- Basic understanding of digital media platforms and social media.
- Eagerness to learn and a proactive attitude.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
Preferred Qualifications
- Some experience with content management systems (CMS) or digital publishing tools.
- Basic photography or videography skills.
- Familiarity with the Mackay and surrounding regions.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
