Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and visionary Library Director / Head Archivist to lead our comprehensive library and archival services. This pivotal role requires a deep understanding of library science, archival principles, and a strong commitment to preservation and accessibility. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the acquisition, cataloging, preservation, and accessibility of our extensive collections, ensuring they meet the needs of researchers, scholars, and the public. You will drive strategic initiatives, manage a dedicated team, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to enhance our global reputation as a leading cultural and research institution. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategic plans for library and archival services, aligning with the institution's overall mission.
  • Oversee the acquisition, processing, preservation, and access to all collections, including rare books, manuscripts, and digital archives.
  • Manage and mentor a team of librarians, archivists, and support staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
  • Ensure compliance with national and international archival standards and best practices.
  • Develop and manage the departmental budget, ensuring effective resource allocation.
  • Lead initiatives for digital preservation and access to enhance the library's online presence and reach.
  • Cultivate relationships with donors, researchers, academic institutions, and other cultural organisations globally.
  • Advise on legal and ethical issues related to intellectual property, copyright, and access to sensitive materials.
  • Represent the institution at national and international conferences and forums.
  • Evaluate and integrate new technologies to improve efficiency and user experience in library and archival operations.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Library Science, Archival Studies, Information Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience in a major library or archival institution.
  • Demonstrated expertise in archival theory, preservation techniques, and collection management.
  • Strong understanding of digital asset management systems and digital preservation strategies.
  • Proven ability to manage complex budgets and allocate resources effectively.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Experience with strategic planning and policy development.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and develop a diverse team of professionals.
  • Familiarity with intellectual property rights, copyright, and data privacy regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant field.
  • Experience with grant writing and fundraising.
  • Proficiency in multiple languages.
  • Knowledge of international library and archival standards and networks.
  • Experience working with diverse international collections and user communities.
  • Membership in professional associations (e.g., ALA, SAA, IFLA).
