Job Description

Are you passionate about making a tangible difference in your community? The Houston Coalition for the Homeless is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Local Council Homeless Outreach Worker to join our vital team. In this role, you will be on the front lines, engaging directly with individuals experiencing homelessness to provide immediate support, connect them with critical services, and advocate for their needs. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to meaningful change, working closely with local council initiatives to implement effective solutions. Full training will be provided to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in this impactful position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular street outreach to identify and engage individuals experiencing homelessness.
  • Build rapport and trust with service users, assessing their immediate needs and vulnerabilities.
  • Provide information and referrals to emergency shelters, food banks, healthcare services, and mental health support.
  • Assist individuals in navigating complex systems to access housing, benefits, and identification documents.
  • Advocate on behalf of service users with other agencies and community partners.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of interactions and service provision.
  • Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and community events related to homelessness initiatives.
  • Collaborate with local council members and other stakeholders to identify systemic barriers and improve service delivery.
  • Respond sensitively and effectively to crisis situations, following established protocols.

Required Skills

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to engage diverse populations.
  • Strong empathy, patience, and a non-judgmental approach.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging environments.
  • Basic computer proficiency for data entry and record-keeping.
  • A genuine desire to help others and make a positive impact in the community.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new situations and policies.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some college coursework in social work, psychology, public health, or a related field.
  • Previous volunteer experience in social services, community outreach, or with vulnerable populations.
  • Knowledge of local community resources and services in Houston.
  • Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish) is a plus.
