Job Description
Are you passionate about marine life and eager to learn the foundational principles of marine mammal care and training? Adventure Aquarium is offering an exciting, hands-on Marine Mammal Training Internship for individuals seeking to embark on a career in animal husbandry and training. This entry-level internship provides a unique opportunity to gain practical experience, observe seasoned professionals, and contribute to the daily welfare of our beloved marine mammals. No prior professional experience in animal training is required; we are looking for dedicated individuals with a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, and an unwavering commitment to animal welfare. This is a chance to work alongside our expert trainers, assisting with daily routines, preparing diets, and learning positive reinforcement techniques firsthand.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist marine mammal trainers with daily animal care routines, including feeding, habitat maintenance, and enrichment preparation.
- Observe training sessions and learn about positive reinforcement techniques and operant conditioning.
- Help with diet preparation, ensuring accurate measurements and adherence to strict nutritional guidelines.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of animal habitats, work areas, and commissary spaces.
- Participate in educational presentations and guest interactions as opportunities arise.
- Record and organize daily observations, animal behaviors, and feeding logs.
- Shadow senior trainers to understand behavior management, medical procedures, and animal welfare protocols.
- Attend departmental meetings and educational workshops to further knowledge and understanding.
Required Skills
- Strong passion for marine animals and conservation.
- Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Reliable, punctual, and highly motivated.
- Capable of physical activity including lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, standing for long periods, and working in various weather conditions.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new challenges.
- Comfortable working in and around water.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Biology, Zoology, Marine Science, Animal Behavior, or a related field.
- Previous volunteer experience at an aquarium, zoo, or animal rescue organization.
- CPR and First Aid certification.
