Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Marine Patrol Assistant to join our Public Safety team. This role is crucial in ensuring the safe and responsible use of Cambridge’s waterways, promoting compliance with local bylaws, and assisting the public. As a Marine Patrol Assistant, you will operate council-provided watercraft to patrol designated areas, respond to incidents, and provide a visible presence to foster a safe environment for all waterway users. Full training on specific procedures and local regulations will be provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Patrol designated waterways using council-provided watercraft to ensure public safety and compliance with bylaws.
- Respond to incidents, emergencies, and public inquiries on the water.
- Provide assistance and information to waterway users, promoting safe practices.
- Enforce local bylaws and regulations pertaining to watercraft, mooring, and waterway usage.
- Conduct routine checks and basic maintenance of watercraft and associated equipment.
- Prepare clear and concise incident reports and daily activity logs.
- Work collaboratively with other public safety teams and emergency services.
- Participate in community engagement and educational initiatives related to water safety.
- Maintain a professional and visible presence, representing Cambridge City Council.
Required Skills
- Ability to swim confidently.
- Valid UK driving license.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with the public.
- Basic knowledge of water safety and navigation principles.
- Physical fitness commensurate with the demands of operating watercraft and performing patrols.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills and the ability to act calmly under pressure.
- Basic IT proficiency for report writing and administrative tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience operating powerboats or other watercraft.
- RYA Powerboat Level 2 certification or equivalent.
- First Aid and/or Water Safety training certificate.
- Knowledge of local Cambridge waterways and their specific bylaws.
- Experience in a public facing or enforcement role.
