Job Description

Are you passionate about weather, climate, and environmental science? The North Texas Environmental Research Institute (NTERI) is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Meteorology & Climate Science Intern to join our team at our Wichita Falls weather station. This is an incredible opportunity for an aspiring scientist to gain hands-on experience in meteorological data collection, instrument maintenance, and preliminary analysis. You will work alongside experienced meteorologists and climate scientists, contributing directly to ongoing research and operational weather monitoring efforts in the North Texas region. This entry-level internship is designed to provide comprehensive training and mentorship, making it ideal for students with little to no prior professional experience but a strong academic foundation and a keen interest in the field.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the daily collection and validation of meteorological data from various instruments.
  • Learn to perform routine maintenance and calibration of weather station equipment, including anemometers, thermometers, hygrometers, and rain gauges.
  • Support the preparation of preliminary data reports and graphical representations of weather phenomena.
  • Conduct basic quality control checks on collected data to ensure accuracy and integrity.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to discussions on local weather patterns and climate trends.
  • Assist with the documentation of station operations and data collection protocols.
  • Undertake assigned research tasks and literature reviews related to specific meteorological or climatological topics.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a Bachelor's degree program in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, Climate Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Basic understanding of meteorological principles and weather phenomena.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data handling.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Eagerness to learn new scientific concepts and practical skills.
  • Proficiency with standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior coursework in synoptic meteorology, climatology, or atmospheric physics.
  • Familiarity with data analysis tools or programming languages (e.g., Python, R) is a plus but not required.
  • Experience with GIS software or mapping applications.
  • Demonstrated interest in severe weather events relevant to Texas.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions when performing station duties.
