Job Description

Savannah State University invites enthusiastic and aspiring students to apply for the Observational Astronomy Intern position at our campus observatory. This is a unique opportunity for individuals with a strong interest in astronomy and space science to gain hands-on experience with professional observational equipment and techniques. As an intern, you will work closely with faculty and staff, supporting nightly observations, data collection, and maintaining observatory equipment. This role is ideal for those looking to build foundational skills in observational astronomy and contribute to scientific research in a supportive academic environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist faculty and observatory staff with the setup, calibration, and operation of telescopes and associated instrumentation.
  • Participate in nocturnal observation sessions, gathering astronomical data for ongoing research projects.
  • Perform preliminary data reduction and analysis under supervision, utilizing standard astronomical software.
  • Support the routine maintenance and cleaning of observatory equipment and facilities.
  • Learn and apply various observational techniques, including imaging, spectroscopy, and photometry.
  • Contribute to educational outreach activities and public viewing nights, engaging with visitors and explaining astronomical concepts.
  • Maintain detailed logs of observations, equipment status, and data collected.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program, preferably in Physics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, or a related STEM field.
  • Demonstrated strong interest and enthusiasm for astronomy and space science.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including familiarity with standard office software.
  • Ability to work evening and night hours as required for observational sessions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to follow instructions diligently.
  • Eagerness to learn and a proactive attitude towards problem-solving.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of introductory coursework in physics or astronomy.
  • Familiarity with basic data entry or scientific visualization tools.
  • Experience with amateur telescopes or astrophotography.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
