Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Patent & Intellectual Property Law Intern to join our legal department in Windsor, Ontario. This is an unparalleled opportunity for a current law student to gain hands-on experience in the exciting field of intellectual property law within a fast-paced technology company. You will work closely with our experienced legal counsel and patent agents, contributing to the protection and management of our innovative technologies. This role is designed for someone eager to learn and grow, providing exposure to various aspects of patent prosecution, IP portfolio management, and legal research.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist legal counsel with patentability searches and freedom-to-operate analyses.
- Conduct legal research on various intellectual property matters, including patents, trademarks, and copyrights.
- Support the preparation and filing of patent applications, including drafting specifications and claims.
- Review and organize legal documents, patent filings, and correspondence.
- Assist in managing and maintaining the company's intellectual property database.
- Participate in team meetings and contribute to discussions on IP strategy.
- Learn about international patent laws and prosecution procedures.
- Support the team with administrative tasks as needed.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in an accredited Juris Doctor (J.D.) program.
- Strong academic record.
- Excellent legal research and writing skills.
- Keen attention to detail and organizational abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Demonstrated interest in technology and intellectual property law.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Eagerness to learn and adapt in a dynamic setting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completed coursework in Intellectual Property Law.
- Previous experience with legal research platforms (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis).
- Familiarity with patent databases (e.g., USPTO, EPO, WIPO).
- Science, engineering, or computer science background is a plus.
