Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate individual to join our team as a Public Cemetery Groundskeeper. In this essential outdoor role, you will be responsible for maintaining the serene and dignified appearance of our public cemeteries, ensuring they remain peaceful and well-kept places for reflection and remembrance. This position requires a commitment to high standards of horticultural maintenance and a respectful demeanor. You will play a vital part in upholding the sanctity and beauty of these important community spaces.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform regular grounds maintenance tasks including mowing, strimming, weeding, and pruning.
- Prepare burial plots and assist with grave digging as required, following all safety protocols.
- Maintain paths, borders, and communal areas to a high standard of cleanliness and appearance.
- Operate and maintain a range of horticultural machinery and equipment safely and efficiently.
- Undertake litter picking and waste removal to keep the grounds immaculate and tidy.
- Assist with tree and shrub planting and general landscaping projects within the cemetery grounds.
- Ensure the respectful handling of all cemetery property, memorial items, and floral tributes.
- Adhere to all health and safety regulations and guidelines at all times.
- Interact with members of the public and bereaved families with empathy and professionalism.
Required Skills
- Physical fitness and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- A respectful and compassionate attitude towards visitors and the purpose of the cemetery.
- Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a small team.
- Willingness to learn and undertake training for specialist equipment and procedures.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in grounds maintenance, horticulture, or outdoor manual work.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
- Basic understanding of health and safety in an outdoor environment.
