Job Description
Join the vital Public Works team at the City of Brandon as a Dispatcher, a fast-paced and critical role that ensures the efficient deployment of resources and rapid response to public works issues. You will be the central communication hub, connecting field crews with management and the public, managing service requests, and coordinating emergency responses. This position demands quick thinking, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to thrive under pressure, all while contributing to the smooth operation of our city’s infrastructure and services. Key Responsibilities
- Receive, prioritize, and dispatch service requests and emergency calls to Public Works crews.
- Monitor crew locations and activities using GPS and radio communication systems.
- Maintain accurate logs of all communications, service calls, and crew movements.
- Coordinate with other city departments, emergency services, and external agencies as required.
- Provide timely updates to management and relevant stakeholders on ongoing operations and incidents.
- Assist with record-keeping, data entry, and report generation for departmental operations.
- Operate multi-line telephone systems, two-way radios, and computer-aided dispatch (CAD) software.
- Handle public inquiries and provide information regarding Public Works services and issues.
Required Skills
- Proven ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Proficiency with computer systems, including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to learn and effectively use dispatch software and communication equipment.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to maintain composure and professional demeanor during stressful situations.
- Valid Class 5 driver's license (or equivalent) with a clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a dispatch, call center, or emergency services environment.
- Familiarity with municipal operations or public works services.
- Knowledge of Brandon geography and street layout.
- Experience with Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems.
- Post-secondary education in a relevant field (e.g., Office Administration, Emergency Communications).
