Job Description
Are you an aspiring set designer or art director with a passion for visual storytelling and a keen eye for detail? McCann Detroit is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Set Design & Art Direction Intern to join our dynamic production team. This is an unparalleled opportunity for someone eager to learn the ropes of commercial production, working alongside seasoned professionals to bring creative concepts to life. You will gain hands-on experience in various stages of set design and art direction for high-profile commercial projects, from initial concept development and mood boarding to prop sourcing and on-set assistance. No prior professional experience is required; we are looking for individuals with a strong portfolio, a ‘can-do’ attitude, and a burning desire to learn and contribute.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist Art Directors and Set Designers in researching visual references, styles, and trends.
- Contribute to brainstorming sessions for set concepts and visual themes for commercial shoots.
- Help with creating mood boards, visual presentations, and basic sketches or mock-ups.
- Support the team in sourcing props, furniture, and set dressing elements.
- Aid in organizing and maintaining the production design inventory and materials.
- Provide on-set assistance during commercial shoots, helping with set dressing, prop placement, and minor adjustments.
- Learn about production budgets and timelines related to set design and art direction.
- Collaborate effectively with other departments, including producers, directors, and stylists.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of a design, film, theater, fine arts, or related program.
- A strong portfolio showcasing creative projects (student work, personal projects, etc.) related to set design, art direction, interior design, or visual arts.
- Proficiency in basic design software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator) is a plus, but not required.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Enthusiasm, a proactive attitude, and a strong willingness to learn.
Preferred Qualifications
- Basic understanding of film or commercial production processes.
- Experience with 3D modeling software (e.g., SketchUp, AutoCAD) is a bonus.
- Knowledge of various art styles, architectural periods, and design principles.
