Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Ship Master / Captain to command commercial vessels operating within and from the Port of Brownsville. This pivotal role requires a leader with an impeccable safety record, strong navigational expertise, and the ability to manage a diverse crew effectively. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel, cargo, and personnel, ensuring compliance with all international and national maritime regulations. Key Responsibilities
- Command and navigate commercial vessels safely and efficiently in all weather conditions and through various waterways, including port approaches and open seas.
- Ensure strict adherence to all international, national, and company maritime regulations, policies, and safety management systems (SMS).
- Oversee the loading, stowage, and discharge of cargo, ensuring its security and proper handling.
- Manage and lead the vessel's crew, fostering a culture of safety, discipline, and teamwork.
- Conduct regular safety drills, inspections, and maintenance checks on all vessel systems and equipment.
- Maintain accurate logbooks, records, and reports, including navigation, engine, cargo, and personnel data.
- Communicate effectively with port authorities, pilots, agents, and company management.
- Manage vessel budgets, provisions, and supplies.
- Respond effectively to emergencies, including fire, collision, grounding, and man overboard situations.
- Ensure the vessel remains in compliance with classification society rules and statutory requirements.
Required Skills
- Unlimited Master's License (or equivalent) for appropriate tonnage/vessel type.
- Valid STCW certificates.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Master or Chief Mate on commercial vessels.
- Thorough knowledge of IMO regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, ISPS).
- Proficiency in navigation, ship handling, and bridge resource management (BRM).
- Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent command of written and spoken English.
- Ability to pass a comprehensive medical examination and drug/alcohol screening.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate a diverse crew.
- Experience with port operations in the Gulf of Mexico region preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Maritime Studies, Nautical Science, or related field.
- Experience with specific vessel types relevant to Port of Brownsville operations (e.g., tankers, bulk carriers, container ships).
- Familiarity with electronic chart display and information systems (ECDIS) and other modern navigation technologies.
- Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
