Job Description
Join ABM Industries as a Seasonal Snow Plow / Gritter Driver in Sandy, Utah, playing a crucial role in maintaining safe roadways and public access during winter weather events. This contract position is vital for ensuring the safety and mobility of our community members. You will be responsible for operating heavy equipment, including snowplows and gritters, to clear snow and apply de-icing materials on designated routes within the public sector. This is a demanding yet rewarding role requiring reliability, a strong commitment to safety, and the ability to work flexible hours, often on short notice, during inclement weather. Full training on specific routes and equipment will be provided, but prior experience with heavy machinery is essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate snow plows and gritter trucks to clear snow and ice from public roads, parking lots, and designated areas.
- Apply de-icing materials (e.g., salt, grit) accurately and efficiently according to established procedures.
- Perform pre-shift and post-shift inspections of vehicles and equipment, reporting any mechanical issues or damage promptly.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and traffic laws while operating machinery.
- Maintain accurate records of routes completed, materials used, and hours worked.
- Respond promptly to call-outs for snow and ice removal, often outside of regular business hours and during adverse weather conditions.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members regarding operational status and potential hazards.
- Ensure equipment is cleaned and maintained in good working order.
Required Skills
- Valid Class D or higher driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Minimum of 1 year (12 months) experience operating heavy vehicles or machinery.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging weather conditions.
- Strong commitment to safety procedures and protocols.
- Mechanical aptitude for basic equipment checks and minor troubleshooting.
- Flexibility to work varied hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, on short notice.
- Physical ability to perform demanding tasks, including climbing in and out of equipment and occasional manual labor.
Preferred Qualifications
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B.
- Previous experience operating snow plows, gritters, or similar winter maintenance equipment.
- Familiarity with local roadways and public sector operational zones in the Sandy, Utah area.
- Experience working in a public sector or contract services environment.
- Certification in heavy equipment operation.
