Job Description
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Soil Conservationist (Assistant) to join our team in Glenorchy. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals passionate about environmental science and sustainable land management, particularly within rural government projects. You will gain hands-on experience by assisting senior conservationists in various field activities, data collection, and community engagement initiatives focused on soil health, erosion control, and land rehabilitation. Full training and mentorship will be provided, offering a fantastic opportunity to build a career in environmental conservation.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior Soil Conservationists with field assessments and site visits in rural areas.
- Collect soil samples, conduct basic site surveys, and record environmental data accurately.
- Support the implementation of soil conservation plans and land management strategies.
- Engage with landowners and rural communities under supervision, providing information and support.
- Prepare basic reports and maintain project documentation.
- Operate and maintain field equipment responsibly.
- Contribute to educational programs and workshops related to soil health.
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and departmental policies.
Required Skills
- A strong interest and passion for environmental conservation and sustainable land management.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Physical fitness and willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains.
- Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite).
- Valid Australian Driver's License.
- Eagerness to learn and develop new skills in soil science and conservation practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of a Certificate or Diploma in Environmental Science, Agriculture, Land Management, or a related field (or currently studying).
- Some prior volunteer experience in environmental projects or fieldwork.
- Basic understanding of Tasmanian ecosystems and agricultural practices.
