Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and professional Specialized Heavy Haul Escort Driver (Pilot Car Operator) to join our growing team. This is a critical role responsible for ensuring the safe transit of oversized and overweight loads, requiring extensive travel primarily within Saskatchewan and sometimes across Western Canada. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of provincial transportation regulations, exceptional defensive driving skills, and a commitment to safety and communication. This role offers the opportunity to be an integral part of high-value projects, with all necessary travel expenses covered.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate a pilot/escort vehicle safely and professionally, adhering to all provincial and federal regulations for oversized loads.
- Maintain constant communication with the heavy haul truck driver, flag persons, and relevant authorities.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the pilot vehicle and associated equipment.
- Provide clear and concise directions and warnings to oncoming traffic and the heavy haul convoy.
- Assist with route planning and identify potential obstacles or hazards.
- Document daily logs, incident reports, and inspection forms accurately.
- Ensure all safety equipment (flags, signs, lights) is properly maintained and utilized.
- Represent the company with professionalism and courtesy at all times.
Required Skills
- Valid Class 5 driver's license with a clean driving abstract.
- Minimum 2 years of professional driving experience.
- Proficiency in operating two-way radios and communication devices.
- Strong understanding of traffic laws and regulations.
- Excellent defensive driving skills and situational awareness.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Flexibility to travel extensively and work irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a pilot car driver or in heavy haul logistics.
- Certification in pilot car operations (e.g., Alberta Transportation Pilot Car Certificate or equivalent).
- Knowledge of load securement principles.
- Basic mechanical knowledge for minor vehicle issues.
