Job Description
Are you passionate about wildlife and eager to make a difference? The Cape Breton Wildlife Conservation Society is offering an exciting opportunity for a Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation Intern. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals with no prior professional experience in wildlife care, but who possess a strong desire to learn and contribute to animal welfare. You will gain hands-on experience in various aspects of wildlife rehabilitation, from intake to release, under the guidance of experienced professionals. Full training will be provided to ensure you develop the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in this vital role.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the daily care and feeding of various wildlife species, including preparing species-appropriate diets and enrichment items.
- Learn and practice safe animal handling and restraint techniques under supervision.
- Support staff in facility cleaning and maintenance tasks, adhering to strict hygiene and biosecurity protocols.
- Monitor animal behavior and report any concerns or changes to senior staff.
- Assist with intake procedures for new animal arrivals, including initial assessments and record keeping.
- Contribute to maintaining accurate animal records and logs.
- Participate in educational outreach programs and community events as needed.
- Adhere to all safety guidelines and protocols for both human and animal well-being.
Required Skills
- A genuine passion for wildlife and conservation.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and punctuality.
- Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent observation skills and attention to detail.
- Physical ability to perform tasks such as lifting (up to 25 lbs), standing for extended periods, bending, and working in various weather conditions.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new challenges and environments.
- Compassionate, patient, and respectful demeanor towards animals and colleagues.
- No prior professional experience in wildlife rehabilitation is required; full training will be provided.
Preferred Qualifications
- Enrollment in or completion of a related program (e.g., biology, veterinary technology, environmental science, zoology).
- Previous volunteer experience with animals or in a conservation setting.
- Basic knowledge of local wildlife species found in Nova Scotia.
- Valid driver's license and access to reliable transportation.
