Job Description
Queensland State Archives is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic State Archive Clerk with a passion for historical records to join our team in Runcorn. This entry-level role is perfect for individuals looking to start a career in archives, cultural heritage, or information management. You will play a crucial role in the day-to-day operations of our facility, assisting with the management, preservation, and accessibility of invaluable historical documents and records. Full training will be provided to ensure your success in this vital position. This is an on-site role, working directly with our physical collections.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the intake, processing, and cataloging of new archival accessions.
- Accurately retrieve and re-file historical records for researchers, staff, and government agencies.
- Perform data entry to update and maintain archival databases and finding aids.
- Support the preservation team by undertaking basic conservation tasks, re-housing records, and monitoring storage conditions.
- Assist researchers and visitors with inquiries, guiding them through our collections and search tools.
- Participate in inventory checks and ensure the accurate organization of records within storage areas.
- Handle and transport archival materials carefully and according to established guidelines.
- Support general administrative tasks as required within the archives department.
Required Skills
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in all tasks.
- Basic proficiency with computer systems and data entry.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
- A genuine interest in history, cultural heritage, or archival work.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting and moving archive boxes (up to 15kg) and standing/walking for periods.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in an office or administrative support role.
- Familiarity with record-keeping systems or databases.
- Completed or currently pursuing studies in history, information management, library science, or a related field.
- Knowledge of basic archival principles or practices.
