Job Description
Christopher Newport University is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Sustainable Agriculture & Permaculture Intern to join our campus sustainability team. This entry-level internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in sustainable land management, organic gardening, and permaculture design principles within a university setting. No prior professional experience in sustainable agriculture is required; we are looking for individuals eager to learn and contribute to our green initiatives. You will work closely with our facilities and sustainability staff, learning practical skills and contributing to projects that enhance campus biodiversity, food production, and environmental education.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the daily care and maintenance of campus gardens and permaculture demonstration sites.
- Participate in planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, and composting activities.
- Learn and apply permaculture principles in garden design and maintenance.
- Support educational workshops and outreach events related to sustainable agriculture for the campus community.
- Monitor garden health, identify pests/diseases, and implement organic solutions under supervision.
- Contribute to data collection and reporting on garden productivity and sustainability metrics.
- Help maintain tools and equipment, ensuring a safe and organized work environment.
Required Skills
- Strong interest in sustainable agriculture, permaculture, environmental science, or related fields.
- Eagerness to learn and take initiative.
- Ability to perform physical tasks outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Reliable and punctual.
Preferred Qualifications
