Job Description

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is seeking motivated and dedicated individuals to join our team as Trainee Border Inspection Officers. Key Responsibilities

  • Participate actively in all phases of a comprehensive training program to learn relevant laws, regulations, and inspection procedures.
  • Under supervision, assist in the inspection of persons, vehicles, and cargo entering and exiting Port Authority facilities to detect illegal or prohibited items.
  • Learn to identify potential threats, contraband, and regulatory violations.
  • Observe and assist in conducting interviews and questioning individuals to gather information and assess potential risks.
  • Accurately document observations, findings, and actions taken during inspections.
  • Maintain a high level of vigilance and situational awareness in a dynamic environment.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and operational guidelines.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues, supervisors, and the public.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

Required Skills

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation and drug screening.
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Capacity to learn and apply complex rules and regulations.
  • Commitment to public service and safety.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, and perform duties in various weather conditions for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
