Job Description

CSX Transportation is actively seeking dedicated and safety-focused individuals to join our team as a Freight Train Conductor Trainee. This is an incredible opportunity for those with no prior rail experience, offering a comprehensive paid academy program designed to equip you with all the necessary skills and certifications to become a certified Freight Train Conductor. You will learn the intricate details of railroad operations, safety protocols, and train handling, all while receiving compensation. The role involves significant travel within our operational territory, ensuring a dynamic and varied work experience as you contribute to vital freight transportation across the East Coast.
Key Responsibilities
- Successfully complete all training requirements in the paid conductor academy, demonstrating proficiency in all operational and safety procedures.
- Operate trains and railroad equipment, including locomotive cabs, in compliance with all federal regulations, company rules, and safety standards.
- Monitor track conditions, signals, and other operational indicators to ensure safe and efficient train movement.
- Perform switching operations, couple and uncouple rail cars, and control train movements in rail yards and on mainlines.
- Conduct thorough inspections of trains, track, and equipment, identifying and reporting any defects or issues.
- Accurately complete all required paperwork and electronic documentation related to train operations, incidents, and equipment.
- Communicate effectively with other crew members, dispatchers, and yard personnel using radios and other communication systems.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and participate actively in creating a safe working environment.
- Work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts, often away from home for extended periods.
Required Skills
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid Driver's License and ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) if required.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
- Strong commitment to safety and adherence to strict operational guidelines.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
- Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Physical capability to perform demanding tasks, including climbing, lifting, bending, and working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Willingness to travel extensively and be away from home for prolonged periods.

- Prior experience in physically demanding outdoor work or roles requiring strict adherence to safety protocols.
- Basic mechanical aptitude or experience with machinery.
