Job Description
Are you passionate about helping others and making a tangible difference in your community? Harris County Public Health is seeking compassionate and dedicated individuals to join our team as a Trainee Crisis Hotline Operator. This is an entry-level, full-time position where no prior experience is required, as comprehensive training will be provided. As a key member of our public health team, you will provide immediate, empathetic support to callers experiencing various crises, helping them navigate challenging situations and connect with vital resources. This role involves shift work, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to ensure 24/7 availability for those in need.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete comprehensive training on crisis intervention techniques, active listening, and resource navigation.
- Answer incoming calls on the crisis hotline with empathy, professionalism, and a non-judgmental approach.
- Assess caller needs and provide immediate emotional support and crisis de-escalation.
- Accurately document call information and maintain confidentiality of all interactions.
- Refer callers to appropriate community resources, mental health services, and emergency support as needed.
- Collaborate with supervisors and team members to ensure effective service delivery.
- Adhere to all policies, procedures, and ethical guidelines of Harris County Public Health.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development.

- Some college coursework in psychology, social work, public health, or a related field.
