Job Description

Are you passionate about public health and environmental protection? Durham County Council is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Trainee Environmental Health Inspector to join our vital team. Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in a structured training program to gain a deep understanding of environmental health legislation, policies, and best practices.
  • Assist qualified Environmental Health Officers in conducting inspections and investigations across various premises (e.g., food businesses, private housing, workplaces).
  • Learn to identify and assess potential risks to public health and the environment.
  • Support the preparation of reports and documentation related to inspections and investigations.
  • Respond to and investigate complaints from members of the public regarding environmental health matters, under supervision.
  • Communicate effectively with businesses and residents, providing advice and guidance on compliance.
  • Attend relevant professional development courses and workshops as part of your training pathway.
  • Develop an understanding of statutory nuisance, pollution control, and public health enforcement procedures.

Required Skills

  • Strong desire to learn and develop a career in environmental health.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to gather and record information accurately.
  • Good problem-solving abilities and a methodical approach to tasks.
  • Proficiency in basic IT applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).

  • A valid UK driving license and access to a vehicle (or willingness to obtain one) is essential for site visits across the county.

Preferred Qualifications
