Job Description

The City of San Jose is seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Trainee Weights & Measures Inspector. This is an exceptional entry-level opportunity for someone passionate about consumer protection and fair business practices. No prior experience in weights and measures is required, as comprehensive training will be provided. You will learn to inspect, test, and calibrate weighing and measuring devices used in commerce, ensuring accuracy and compliance with state and local regulations. This role involves field work, interacting with businesses, and contributing directly to the integrity of trade within our community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in a structured training program to learn all aspects of weights and measures inspections.
  • Assist experienced inspectors in performing routine inspections of commercial weighing and measuring devices (e.g., scales, gas pumps, scanners).
  • Learn to identify and report non-compliant devices or practices.
  • Document inspection findings accurately and meticulously.
  • Communicate effectively with business owners and operators regarding compliance requirements and inspection results.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and departmental procedures.
  • Prepare for and pass relevant certification examinations upon completion of training.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid California Driver's License and a clean driving record.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow precise instructions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with the public.
  • Basic computer proficiency for data entry and report generation.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to lift and carry equipment (up to 50 lbs) and stand for extended periods.
  • A strong commitment to public service and ethical conduct.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in a related field (e.g., science, engineering, public administration).
  • Experience in customer service or a public-facing role.
  • Familiarity with local government operations.
  • Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish or Vietnamese) is a plus.
