Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and passionate Viticulturist / Vineyard Manager to oversee all aspects of our vineyard operations. This pivotal role involves leading our vineyard team, implementing best practices in grape cultivation, and ensuring the health and productivity of our vines. The successful candidate will be instrumental in maintaining our high standards of quality and contributing to the production of award-winning wines. This is an on-site position located in Sydney, Nova Scotia, and we are open to applications from qualified international candidates who are eligible to work in Canada or willing to relocate.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and supervise all vineyard activities, including planting, pruning, trellising, irrigation, pest and disease management, and harvesting.
- Develop and implement sustainable viticultural practices to enhance grape quality and vineyard health.
- Oversee vineyard staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance management.
- Monitor vine health and soil conditions, implementing corrective actions as needed.
- Prepare and manage the vineyard budget, ensuring cost-effective operations.
- Maintain detailed records of vineyard activities, treatments, and yields.
- Collaborate closely with the winemaking team to achieve desired grape characteristics and quality.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Required Skills
- Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in viticulture or vineyard management.
- Demonstrated expertise in grape cultivation techniques and vineyard operations.
- Strong leadership and team management abilities.
- Proficiency in vineyard machinery operation and maintenance.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Viticulture, Horticulture, Agronomy, or a related field.
- Experience with organic or biodynamic viticulture practices.
- Knowledge of Canadian viticultural regions and challenges.
- Proficiency in vineyard management software.
- Fluency in multiple languages (beneficial for international candidates).
