Job Description
The Zoology & Animal Husbandry Intern will gain invaluable hands-on experience in the daily care and management of various animal species within our sanctuary. This entry-level internship is designed for individuals passionate about zoology and animal welfare who are eager to learn the practical skills required for a career in animal husbandry. Under the direct supervision of experienced animal care specialists, interns will contribute to maintaining the health, safety, and well-being of our animal residents, with a specific focus on maintaining their enclosures. Full training will be provided for all tasks.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with daily feeding and watering routines for various animals.
- Perform thorough cleaning and sanitization of animal enclosures, habitats, and public areas, adhering to strict hygiene protocols.
- Monitor animal behavior, health, and enclosure integrity, reporting any significant observations or concerns to senior staff promptly.
- Prepare enrichment activities and assist in their implementation to promote animal well-being and natural behaviors.
- Participate in facility maintenance tasks, including minor repairs and general upkeep of grounds specifically related to animal enclosures.
- Help maintain accurate records of animal care, feeding schedules, and medical treatments.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and humane animal handling procedures.
- Support educational programs and visitor engagement as needed, promoting our mission of conservation and education.
Required Skills
- Strong passion for animals, wildlife conservation, and environmental education.
- Excellent work ethic, reliability, and punctuality are essential.
- Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work effectively and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Physical stamina and ability to perform tasks requiring bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs), standing for extended periods, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Eagerness to learn new skills and a positive, proactive attitude.
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with team members and the public.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Zoology, Biology, Environmental Science, Animal Science, Veterinary Technology, or a closely related field.
- Previous volunteer experience at an animal shelter, zoo, nature center, farm, or similar animal care facility.
- Basic understanding of animal behavior and welfare principles.
- Familiarity with safety procedures when working around animals.
- Valid driver's license.
